sewing advide: coat tails

Ok I'm going to be making a jacket with coat tails. I've sorta done tails before but I didn't like the way they looked so I'm trying to do it right this time.

I bought the only pattern I could find that had tailed jacket to get an idea from there. The pattern has the tails as a separate piece from the top of the jacket and then attached. While I had always thought it was supposed to be just one continuous piece from the top to the bottom back.

So I'm looking for advice on whether I should go with this and make them separate pieces or try making it one piece that splits (which I've done before)?

I read the directions in the pattern and the method they do does make sense, I've just haven't stared at enough tailed coats to really be able to tell if there was a seam there or not.

do you have a spare muslin lying around from an older costume that already fits you? you can just make modifications to that, really. (provided you keep a collection of patterns/muslins you've made)

alternately, you can assemble your mockup, fit it, etc and then leave the joining seam out for your final version. provided there's no gathering/easing, adding and removing extraneous seams is usually as simple as just leaving them in your muslin pattern piece when you deconstruct your mockup.

(not sure if this is helpful or not, but the only tailed coat I've made/drafted was simon, and that just had a center back seam.)

Yeah, I probably will just go with it being one piece instead of having that horizontal seam there. I was more looking for any special darts or something in this pattern and then was surprised that they had that seam there. I dunno. I mean I read it all so I see how it works and it makes sense. Just not sure if it'll look the way I want or not.

Guess tomorrow I will experiment and such.

Remember my Chaltier cosplay? XD! FWEEE!! TAIL COAT!! that I pretty much measured from the side of my waist so it actually flows when I spin. If you want to go with that pattern that you have its fine, but I don't think it works very well. For me, I jsut regular sewed it inside out then flipped it, it looked better that way but yours may differ. If you have absolutly nothing else to think of, wing it XD! *totally did that for Chalu* XP
