I mean, I know I'm one of your friends who likes Genesis, but what you said here, oh god, this so much, this really bothered me too when I played the game originally:
The fact he has a single wing and is part of the Project and a General kinda takes away from Sephiroth's unique-ness that he always had before CC was made.
It bothered me about Angeal, too. I mean. Guys. Hello. Sephiroth is cool because he's unique. Why did you do that? Although is it ever stated in canon that he's a General? I see it bandied about in fanon a lot, but it was never mentioned in Crisis Core.
There's a pretty lame defense I have heard for the next part, though:
And they screw around with a lot of the original story in all the compilation games. There are scenes that don't work right with the original. Most notably in CC with Genesis talking to Sephiroth in Nibelheim as that scene is an actual scene in the original game but without Genesis obviously.
The defense I've heard (I think the creators may have put this one out to keep people from OMGWTFing) is that the FF7 Nibelheim scene is from Cloud's memories. Since Cloud was outside/fainting for the bits with Genesis, they're not included in his memories. Nothing to do with how "fucked up" or "lame" he is. I love Cloud, but he was outside right then. (Then again, this explanation always seemed a little farfetched to me. It tries too hard, and Cloud was outside for the rest of the scene, too.) However, since Zack was there, it's part of the scene for him.
...kind of like how Last Order showed Seph JUMPING into the mako because it was from the Turks' POV of what happened. Yeah, okay, guys. Whatever you say. :|
Dirge of Cerberus doesn't deserve to be canon.
Err, tl;dr, I guess:
Genesis = Compilation canon Genesis =/= Original game canon
You have the right to defend your personal canon. Seriously. Consider whatever you want canon. Fans like that make me sad to be a younger FF7 fan. I'm always afraid to get lumped in.
...and just wtf at that FF8 thing. WTF.
(As a P.S., I guess I should mention that I played CC before I knew who Gackt was. So the Gackt = Genesis thing didn't bother me much.)
