Cosplay 30 Days - Day 15

Resin lesson of the day: When creating your mold, make sure your barrier is sturdy enough BEFORE pouring in the rubber. x____x
In my defense, I was using the same method that's always worked for the clear silicone so I just assumed it would work for this too. I didn't think about the fact that the rubber is much more liquidy before it hardens and thus can squeeze through crevices easier. I guess my clay around my cardboard wasn't quite as tight as I thought it was. But yeah this resulted in a major leak and it got pretty messy. Luckily I was still able to salvage most of the rubber and put it back in with a spoon. But I had to stick my fingers directly in and tighten my clay and this resulted in lots of mess and the use of half a roll of paper towels to clean it all up.
...really hope the mold will come out ok after all of that.
15. Your least favourite thing about cosplay
When things go wrong...like yesterday and today. Pfffffft.
Actually that's kinda normal for me and as much as I hate it, its part of the learning experience so no, its not my least favorite.
My ACTUAL least favorite aspect of cosplay...is the drama. Especially everything that has happened since the creation of 4chan. Having cosplayed for about 10 years now (this Otakon will be the 10th year marker! Holy crap!) I've seen some really dramatic changes in the cosplay scene. Its a COMPLETELY different world now than it was when I begun. And its really kinda depressing. There are many times where I wonder why I still cosplay when the majority of the community are going to judge you for the most stupidest things. Everyone takes it too seriously. If you're not perfect, you're considered awful and a laughing stock. If you've got some weight on you, then they say you're ugly and fat (even if your not) and if you're skinny then you're automatically labored a whore and must be anorexic.
Really now. Us geeks have enough of that from the regular world. Cosplay is supposed to be an escape so why bring in these elements and ruin it like that? Kids these days are too afraid to even try to make their own costumes. They buy them online, thinking if they don't have a perfect costume, no one will like them. And its horrible how you have no idea when someone takes your photo, if they're really taking your photo because they like your costume or if they took it 'cause they're planning to post it online and make fun of you.
And one can say that "words can't hurt you" but they can. A lot of my low self-esteem comes from my childhood and the things kids said to me that have never been able to go away despite how many years its been. I'm still very self conscious over things kids made fun of me back then even if they aren't so much an issue anymore. But the point is, even if you try to ignore it and not let it get to you, it often still does even if you don't fully realize it. We laugh it off and turn it into a joke to try to get ourselves to feel better but deep inside we're still hurt. Which is why I get so upset when people do this to each other online in the cosplay world. Its petty and very childish. And usually those making the comments aren't any better in cosplay. Most of the time they aren't even cosplayers at all and thus don't know how hard it can be to create a "perfect" costume.
The other thing that has turned me off of cosplay sometimes is the immaturity in general at cons among most of the younger cosplayers. They seem to have lost a lot of respect these days and as a result give the rest of us who are trying to be mature adults a bad reputation. Because people see these kids doing these things and make assumptions that we're all like that. Such things as vandalism, rude behavior, ignoring authorities, etc. Just 'cause you're wearing a costume doesn't give you an excuse to ignore rules and behave like idiots.
So why do I still cosplay if I hate so much of the community? Because I have too much fun with it. I like making costumes. I like wearing them. I like taking photos with friends. And as long as I have those elements, I'll keep doing it.
